 SP's Editorials - 2002 September

07 Sept 2002

Dear Visitor,

Hope you had a good Onam. We have done what we can to let you celebrate Onam with minimum disturbance. All celebrations especially, Pulikkali, were wonderful and I hope everybody enjoyed to the full extend.

Specially for Onam we had booked a large number of anti-social elements like pick pockets, trouble makers, other thieves etc. Hope it was as effective as intended. You know, nothing can be 100% perfect.

Accidents were more during the Onam season mainly due to increased traffic of holiday makers. Some people think that consuming alcohol and such other intoxicants is an integral part of the festival. If you consume these and confine to your house it is okay, but when you take to driving vehicles after consuming intoxicating drinks it affects the entire community. Youth in their prime are lost to the community. A study shows that the majority of accident victims are in the age group of 15 to 39. That is, the State or community is losing the active service of youth in their prime and in most productive age. Therefore I request such people to be more cautious and be more considerate to the younger generation. Realize that you are committing a crime seriously affecting the individuals concerned and also the entire community. It is also high time that other citizens realize this and wake up to counter this menace in any way they are able to.

This is all the more applicable to Thrissur District since the Highways here are probably the most accident prone in the entire Nation. Therefore the citizens of this district have a moral responsibility to rise to the occasion and erase this stigma.

With regards …
