 SP's Editorials - 2002 June

06th June 2002

Dear visitor,

Welcome back to www.thrissurpolice.com. As many of you have noticed, this section was inactive for the last three weeks, since we are in the process of putting in place certain additions and procedures for better police-public communications. From this week onwards, I shall be highlighting a particular issue of public interest regarding which I shall be happy to hear from each one of you. I believe that such an exercise could serve as a model for finding solutions to certain common problems of the public. I am particularly interested in hearing from concerned young college-going citizens about issues that affect them adversely. Please do take a few minutes every week to respond to this column. This would be of immense value to those of us who are protectors and guardians of the law and order situation in our society.

The issue I would like to focus on this week is the increasing number of incidents of chain-snatching and daylight robberies recently. What I would like to know from you is whether any of you have been personally involved or know of any such incidents first-hand. I would also like to know about actions taken (or otherwise) by local police officials at such times and what effective steps could be taken to prevent such incidents. I am sure that you will agree with me that each one of us needs to be vigilant in controlling incidents of such crimes, and that the perpetrators must be punished, in the interests of a better society. I look forward to hearing from you.

With regards,

G. Janardhanan Nair IPS
Superintendent of Police.

Dear visitor,

First of all let me confess that this district is new to me. By the by I'm absorbing the specialities and peculiarities of the District and imbibing its multifarious personality. Therefore naturally my responses will be a bit on the slow side, but it must not lead you to surmise that an impervious to the needs of the citizens of this District.

The thought which has been passing through my mind off and on is that rather than trying to educate the already opinionated mature citizens, it will be more advantageous, effective and fruitful to try it on the younger generations, to wit, school children. I have already taken some concrete steps in this direction. My interaction with the young, energetic and enthusiastic children of the Chinmaya Vidhyalaya was the first step. The children were very receptive and also willing to interact.

My attempt by this exercise was to remove the fear and aversion about uniformed force from the minds of the children and also to let them know that police men are only a set of people designated to do some specific duties, just like Doctors, Civil servants and others. The role of the children in helping the police force in their duties and also why they should do it was also emphasized. Any how it was a happy session and I, aim to continue this as long as I continue in this post.

Thank you all for helping us by giving an opportunity to correct and improve ourselves to become more efficient in serving the nation and citizen in our beloved district.

With regards

G. Janardhanan Nair IPS
Superintendent of Police.
