 SP's Editorials - 2004 February

Feb 07, 2004

Dear friends,

As you can see yourself we have altered the look of our website. I presume that it is tolerably good. In spite of the change we remain the same; at your service.
We have added certain sections responding missing persons, unidentified dead bodies etc. We suppose that it will be helpful to trace them out if you all really go through the same and try to help us.
Our respectful Director General of Police Sri. Hormis Tharakan IPS will inaugurate our tie up with the Thrissur District Panchayath regarding the programme of promoting Police - Public interaction for the purpose of prevention of crimes i.e.,“Nammude Police Nammukku Vendi” at a public function in Thrissur. I sincerely hope that with the co-operation of the people and their representatives, we would be able to reach out the people and inform them as to how they can help themselves to prevent crime. We do not suppose that this is a cure for all time, but a small step towards Police - Public co-operation in the prevention of crimes.  The large number of suicides has been a highly disturbing feature and I have been thinking how to reduce the same. The curse of high living standards is a major factor for these suicides. Another factor seems to be down sizing of the families due to which there is none to the family to whom a person with troubled mind can turn to for advice. I think that a phone - in counseling center will be of great help in dealing with this issue. The person with thoughts of suicide is unlikely to travel to go to a counseling center to get advice. However, if there is a phone number easy to remember, they may at least phone up to talk. This way will enable them to get over the suicidal thoughts and lead them to a mental health center for further advice or treatment.
I know that such centers have been started earlier also but none is in good working condition now. The difficulty seems to be lack of funds and dedicated persons to follow up. Since there is a problem faced by this district it is the citizens of this district that must come up with suggestions and also to setup sufficient funds for the effort without anybody needing to go around in search of funds every now and then.

I invite suggestions of all the citizens in the district in this matter. Correspond through the website directly with me.

Dear friends,

An interactive programme organized jointly by the Thrissur District Police and Thrissur District Panchayath was inaugurated by our Hon.Director General of Police Sri. Hormis Tharakan IPS on 13th Feb 2004. The D.G.P appreciated the efforts taken by the Thrissur District Police to increase interaction between the Police and the Public and in bringing out leaflets useful to the Public. A combined issue of five such leaflets written by me and illustrated by Sri. Nandan Pillai, a gifted artist and Director of OrgPEOPLE, was also released for distribution among the public by the D.G.P. The topics discussed in this booklet:
1. Problems of Women and Children
2. Prevention of Vehicle Thefts
3. Prevention of House Burglaries
4. Prevention of Atrocities against Women
5. Traffic guidelines for safe driving

The above topics make up the agenda for discussion with members of the Public during the planned interactive meetings at the Block level as part of the district - wide "Reach out to the Public" campaign
These meetings will be held in each of the 17 blocks of the Thrissur District, scheduled to be held from 23-02-04 to 09-03-04. The meetings will be attended by local MLA, other elected representatives, Political leaders, representatives of voluntary organizations etc. The main thrust of the meetings will be to identify areas where the Police and the Public can actively co-operate to prevent crimes. All the suggestions and opinions received at these Block Level meetings would be collated and evaluated at a special district level meeting involving peoples representatives, press persons and senior Police officers. Thereafter suggestions that could be implemented at district level would be implemented and others will be referred to higher authorities for consideration.
I think this will prove that the Police is definitely concerned about the welfare of the Public and are willing to hear an implement workable suggestions received. I hope this will open a new era in Police - Public co-operation in prevention of crimes

Dear friends,

We have been implementing our programme " Nammude Police Namukku Vendi", by conducting meetings all over the District at various blocks. So far meetings have been conducted at Mullassery, Irinjalakuda, Chalakudy and Kodungallur blocks. There have been good responses from the public as well as the representatives.

A booklet containing different pamphlets prepared by me have been distributed at the meetings and people are finding them useful. The booklets have been printed with the active help of the District Panchayat, Thrissur.

Several useful suggestions regarding improving Police-Public relations and interactions have been raised in the meetings. They were all recorded and they will be discussed at a district level meeting to be conducted after the block level meetings. Then the feasible suggestions can be implemented.

It has also been suggested in the meetings that more such meetings may be conducted at lower levels possibly at Panchayat level. I am fully agreeable to these suggestions. Such meetings for Police-Public co-operation can be conducted at housing colonies and wherever such meetings are found necessary and useful. We have financial constraints regarding the printing and distribution of such booklets; however, this difficulty can be overcome by co-operation such as is being extended by the Thrissur District Panchayat. I welcome all who are willing to help in printing of the booklets so that they can be distributed more widely. I am definitely happy that the booklet have been found to be very useful and informative by the public.

A suggestion has also come up from the Public that our Policemen also must be motivated and made more co-operative with the public. I am glad to say that efforts are on in this direction also and courses of serious intent are being conducted at all levels of Police Hierarchy. These courses and training are a continuing process and are proving to be very useful and informative. The Policemen are also appreciative of such efforts to make their services more useful to the public. Ways to improve their health like mass medical check ups, Yoga classes, Counseling by experts to help the Policemen to deal with stress better and talks by various experts in the field of Medicine, Management etc also being conducted.

The ongoing interaction meetings are also helping members of the Police force to be more co-operative and helpful to the Public. To this end they are also being encouraged to take part in the present series of meetings actively.

I sincerely hope that this kind of interaction will make Policing better, effective and useful to the Public.
